AHUs & Fan Coils

Low-energy systems for optimal heat distribution

What are AHUs and Fan Coils?

Efficient air movement is crucial in commercial heat distribution. This is commonly facilitated by fan coils and air handling units (AHUs).

AHUs blend fresh external air with in-house air, heating them both through the hot water heating modules inside the unit.

Hot water can be supplied from a range of equipment including biomass boilers, gasification/pyrolysis plant, heat pumps and fossil fuel boilers.

What are the benefits of using AHUs in your poultry shed?

  1. Continuous high volume of air movement

  2. Continuous air mixing and destratification, which prevents pockets of differing air temperatures and layers of fresh and stale air

  3. Fast moving air is kept high in the building, so the air movement on the floor near the birds is gentle, controllable and continuous

  4. Very even temperature throughout the building

  5. Fresh air can be introduced continuously (throughout the crops)

  6. Air is mixed to a suitable temperature before reaching the birds

CFE provides Air Flow CFD simulation and physical on-site  smoke testing to optimise the heat distribution.

CFE collaborates closely with suppliers of air handling units and fan coils to supply systems with low parasitic energy use, and which prioritise house climatic conditions and therefore bird welfare.

Here is a diagram of how 2 AHUs work in a typical poultry building

CFE are UK suppliers of Multiheat Hot Water fan coil Unit – providing dry heat from a unique air distribution unit. The Multiheat HW Unit consists of:

  1. a high efficiency heat exchanger

  2. axial fan

  3. a uniquely designed distribution device

This is how it works:

Hot water is supplied from an external boiler and passed through the heat exchanger. The fan sucks the air from inside the building, through the heat exchanger, and pushes out the warm air equally through the six air outlets in a horizontal flow over the birds. The amount of air and the direction of flow can be adjusted by the flaps inside each air outlet.

The built-in stainless steel flaps can be adjusted to influence air flow of each of the six air outlets, or even to close one outlet. The air can be distributed up to 15 metres which serves 30 metre wide houses.

The units hang in the middle of the poultry house, for optimal air distribution to all corners of the building. Warm air reaches the sidewalls and rises to the ceiling, where it returns to the HW unit for a natural circulation of warm air. This can be improved by installing an inflow rectangular duct placed on top of the unit.

A simple click system makes it easy to clean the unit without dismantling. No high-pressure cleaner is needed - just a normal water flow. High efficiency fans are available in 1-phase or 3-phase versions and controllable by frequency drives. The body of the unit is made of durable ABS, which is a highly heat-resistant material.

Benefits of using Multiheat's Hot Water Unit:

  1. No CO2 production

  2. Level distribution of heat (≤ 0.5 oC)

  3. Dryer litter, preventing ammonia burns

  4. Reducing energy costs

  5. Non-hazardous - no open flame

  6. Animal wellbeing improved

  7. Easy cleaning

  8. Durable ABS material

  9. 17 to 110 kW units available

  10. Possible to use as cooling

  11. Lower capital cost
